"And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail." [Lk 16:17]
The amount of positive energy in the universe is immense. Even the energy contained in just a single grain of rice is very large; if it were possible to convert the entirety of its mass into pure energy, it would come to around an equivalent of 1,500 tons of TNT. No doubt, in our physical universe, there is an incredible amount of mass and energy, and the amount of energy it would take to cause all of it to be destroyed would be even more vastly incomprehensible. To annihilate all of the trillions upon trillions of lightyears of space, stars, nebula, and planets – even without considering the incredible mountains and depths of ocean and life found just here on earth –would require something supernatural. And though the power necessary to affect such destruction is so vast, yet Jesus proclaims this is easy in comparison to nullifying even the smallest point of God’s word. He says,
“And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.” [Lk 16:17]
We know the heavens and earth will indeed pass away, they will be destroyed; Jesus tells us later in Luke, “heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.” [Lk 21:33] This will occur at “The Day of The Lord…in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat…” [2 Pe 3:10] The only one who holds the power to destroy all of creation, is the same one who created it: that is, God.
On that dreadful day, in His own good timing, God will accomplish these things; however, even all of the destructive force which will be unleashed upon earth by God, which will go so far as to melt the elements, will pale in comparison to the power it would conceivably take to make void even one accent or one Yodh (י) in God’s law.
This is an extremely important and encouraging point regarding God’s word, for within it are contained “exceeding great and precious promises” [2 Pe 1:4] which are for our benefit and which affect every aspect of our lives, both now and eternally. God’s word is thusly seen to be enormously strong. It will never fail us, nor shall it ever be taken away. God’s word to us is sure and steadfast, and much like Christ our hope (who is called The Word of God), it is “an anchor of the soul.” [Heb 6:19] Praise be to God, it being “impossible for [Him] to lie,” [Heb 6:18] who has given us such assurance that we might live our lives seeking Him out in His word and submitting to it in humble obedience. There is not another book like this great law; truly, as Moses said of Israel could also be said of us, who are “an holy nation,” – “what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?” [1 Pe 2:9, Deut 4:8]
