The Fire

In this life, the heat of hell warms the sinner from afar,
but when Christ shall bring him near to those devilish gates,
their form and figure shall quickly disappear
from that which seemed to glint,
shifting quickly through the lens of Christ,
And turn to show its glow was never friendly,
nor its warmth ever for gain;
But those nether gates which lead to death,
Though the road be wide and paved with ease,
At the last moment shall curl upon the man who reaches thus far,
And snare him for eternity, where he shall
Lurk and wail and gnash, burdened with his sin
And ever pierced in his heart
For his foolish pursuit of earth’s faint shine, and neglect of Christ’s eternal luster,
while across the impassable gulf the radiance of God’s glory and beauty and freedom,
Ever bring to remembrance what things, though once offered,
Now never shall be, for his abode remains below,
With creatures fit for shame.

What once kept our gaze,
the fires of the pit,
whose glow did stain our eyes with sin,
we now shall see,
Through Christ’s light,
the truth of what is there;
no more a pleasant comfort, but a truly vile heap,
which deceives those bound by its chain,
And by its reach

So let us with earnest zeal, with a fire that will never scorch,
tell of our dear Savior’s plight by the fire of The Spirit,
Speaking of that glorious day when Christ fell upon the tree,
And when all the sin of mankind was pushed upon his brow,
and He, the Hero of our faith,
Our precious King of Old, clothed with zeal,
bloodied but triumphant,
Took His final bow to snatch us from the fires of hell,
And grant us life for evermore.

Now we, like Him, if we so believe,
Shall be raised up in like manner, always to be —
Guided by His Spirit, hopeful for His mercy, for He our King
And Brother and Priest, loves us with dear and
Unquenchable fervor.
