"Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name." [Rev 3:12]
One of the promises given to the overcomer, (and “who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” [1 Jn 5:5]), is that Jesus “will write upon him the name of [His] God…and…[His] new name.” To the man who believes in Jesus, this promise is given: and though it certainly has a greater and more literal fulfilment in the future, yet even now we can say in a spiritual sense that The Lord has written His name upon us. For again, we are “sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise” “unto the day of redemption.” [Eph 1:13; 4:30] There is not a chance that we should be lost: presently and always forevermore we are Jesus’ possession, “a possession for Himself,” [1 Pe 2:9] for He has “purchased [us] with His own blood.” [Acts 20:28] And so, though we may not literally have His name stamped upon us as of yet, even still we are His – we are The Lord’s own private possession. Just as when a name is affixed upon an object, signifying that object belongs to the name, so too it is with us: we “belong to Christ.” [Mk 9:41]
To add to this truth, The Lord says, “in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.” [Ex 20:24] The LORD promises to Moses that in all places where He puts His name, He will bless. And as we have seen, in Christ, we are such a place that The Lord has put His name. Therefore, because Jesus’ name is upon us and in us, because we are in Christ, The LORD has promised to bless us. And we shall be blessed. The LORD shall come unto us, as He has said, and bless us; and as David says in prayer, “for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed forever,” [1 Ch 17:27] so too we shall forever experience The Lord’s blessing. Because we are forever in Christ, never to depart, (a truth which Jesus Himself is determined to fulfil, saying, “and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” [Jn 10:28]), we shall forever experience the blessing of God.
May Jesus be ever praised for this. Because it is for His great character and position that we are blessed. It is because His name is upon us, the very name of God, that The Father is determined to bless us. It is not for our excellency, nor our prestige, nor anything that we have or do or can do – but only for Jesus His Son. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” [Eph 1:3]
