"Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for The LORD will do great things." [Joel 2:21]
The LORD is, “the God that doest wonders.” [Psa 77:14] He is The God that performs wonders. There is no other god besides Him who can perform the miraculous, for, “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.” [Psa 62:11] Yes, and again, “blessed be The LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.” [Psa 72:18] God alone does wonderful, miraculous, awe-inspiring things; but even further, He only does wonderful things. It is not possible that God should do something mundane, normal, or altogether average. “For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.” [Psa 86:10] Every action that God puts His hand forth to accomplish, whether we perceive it as great or not, is in fact great. It is not possible that He, “The LORD of Hosts, [who] dwelleth between the cherubim,” [1 Sam 4:4] that He, “The LORD, The God of all flesh” [Jer 32:27] for whom nothing is too hard, yes, it is not possible that He should do something less-than-wonderful.
Have you been discouraged lately, dear Christian? Have you felt that God’s power has been lackluster in your life, perhaps even non-existent? Yet be glad and rejoice; as our verse admonishes, “fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for The LORD will do great things.” [Joel 2:21] The LORD shall do great things, He has done great things, and He is doing great things.
But one might say, “Ah, yes, I know of a truth that God is working and doing great things in the lives of those around me; but as for me, I do not see Him at work.” Are you alive, dear Christian? Then God is active in your life, and He is doing great things. For He is the God “in whose hand thy breath is,” yes and in “in whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” [Dan 5:23, Job 12:10] Have you planted even just a mustard seed of faith upon the top of calvary and said: “I believe in Christ!”? Then God is active in your life; for He has made you an everlasting promise: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” [Heb 13:5]
The Lord God, your Father and Creator and King – He only does wondrous things, and He is doing something wonderful in your life. You may not see it, good Christian; but be of good cheer, for thy God worketh! As Christ says, “my Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” [Jn 5:17] Yes, even as it is written of the stones of Solomon’s temple, so too it is true in your life. For as “when it was in building, [that the temple] was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building,” [1 Ki 6:7] so too it may be in your life if you feel that God is not at work. You may not see nor hear the axe or tool of God forming and shaping and working, but rest assured: The LORD God is working on your life and He is doing, and will yet do, great things.
