"Therefore we ought to exceedingly devote ourselves to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should drift away." [Heb 2:1]
As a boat without an anchor drifts; and as a car naturally loses alignment, so too are we without God’s word. In our verse for today we are admonished regarding the necessity to “exceedingly devote” ourselves to Jesus’ words, “lest at any time we should drift away.” Jesus’ words, that “which we have heard,” are imperative to our alignment. Naturally, we tend to become unaligned and drift. But it is the steadfast, yes exceedingly zealous devotion to Jesus’ words which keeps us on course. As a boat without an anchor drifts, we need to cling with both hands to the rope of Christ, who is our hope. We are also told in Hebrews,
“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” [Heb 6:19-20]
In Psalms The Spirit says, “my soul, silently wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him.” [Psa 62:5] That word expectation has a secondary meaning of rope. Jesus, who is our hope, who is even our rope, is securely positioned in heaven, within the veil; and we, as those who believe in Him, are clinging to that hope/rope with all our might, lest we should drift. And the way we cling to it is through His word. For it is His word that gives us hope and keeps us grounded in the promise(s). As it says in Psalms, “remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath given me life.” [Psa 119:49-50] It is The Lord’s words which keep us from drifting, which are a continual source of hope.
Therefore, as Hebrews says, let us exceedingly devote ourselves to Jesus’ words. May our grasp be constant and firm, not light and flimsy, for He is our anchor, He is our means by which we shall not drift away.
