"O taste and see that The LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him." [Psa 34:8]
We can all attest to the pleasure that comes from experiencing good food. Not only does it taste good in the moment, but after having eaten some good food, there is an additional pleasure of expectation the next time that food is going to be had. And, if one can hardly relate with food, then take some other pleasure, for example. When we experience something good for the first time, there is an expectancy the second time as well: we receive a pleasure in the present that comes from expecting some future good.
Let us take these things and seek to apply them spiritually. When you think of The Lord Jesus’ presence or His word, do you meditate thereon with expectation? Have you, as the verse for today states, come to taste and see that The Lord indeed is good? Those who seek The LORD are satisfied. Jesus promises, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” [Jn 6:35] Those who come to Jesus, who eat of Him and drink of Him, as He encourages us to do, shall never depart hungry or thirsty. The LORD, for His great goodness, always gives us what we need when we come to Him. The Spirit says through David, “the young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek The LORD shall not lack any good thing.” [Psa 34:10] If you have thought yourself to be lacking, whether physically or spiritually, today may you sincerely seek The Lord Jesus. For it is promised to us that those who are seeking Him shall not lack any good thing. Again, it is not possible for us to come to Him, for us to eat of Him as it were, as it is written of His gracious character, “for He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness;” and, “thou openest thine hand, and satisfies the desire of every living thing.” [Psa 107:9; 145:16]
Therefore, think to yourself, dear reader. Have you come to The LORD and seen that He is good? Have you found His promises to be true? The LORD and His word are sweeter than honey and more satisfying than any bread. “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” [Psa 119:103] There is an expectation and pleasure which comes not just from eating of Christ and His words, but of having experienced and seen that He is indeed good, and His word is indeed sweet. Come therefore, Christian, and seek The LORD. Come to Christ Jesus with expectation: for unlike the men of this world, who can ruin a good meal even unintentionally, the meal which Jesus has to offer us, yes even Himself, shall never be lacking or less-than-promised. “O taste and see that The LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.” [Psa 34:8]
