"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." [1 Pe 2:1-3]
One of the most interesting things about a mother’s breastmilk is its ability to change. Based on the hormones which a child gives off to the mother through breastfeeding, the milk changes. Based on the baby’s need/condition, the mother’s body will automatically change the composition of the breastmilk to provide the baby with the required nutrients. Truly, The Lord’s creation is awe-inspiring; and as it is written, “The LORD is good to all: and His tender mercies are over all His works.” [Psa 145:9]
In the same way that breastmilk will change based on the baby’s needs, The LORD’s word will satisfy our needs too. As we fulfil the admonition given in Peter, “desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby,” The Lord will provide our souls with the required nutrients, leading us to the passage of His word that we need to hear. We don’t have to worry or fret that we are not getting what we need, or that we might miss what God wants to give us: if we are pursuing God in His word, if we are abiding in Him and in the milk of His word, The Lord will see to it that we are getting the required spiritual nutrients for proper growth.
Even as “[our] Father knoweth what things [we] have need of, before [we] ask Him,” [Mt 6:8] even so He knows what our souls and spirits need from His word, and is willing and able to provide. Truly, it is The LORD Himself that we need, for it is from Him, from Jesus, “which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” [Col 2:19] We increase with the increase of God in our lives and in ourselves. And it is a great comfort that The Lord knows what we need; for just as there are thousands of different types of foods, nutrients, herbs, and vitamins in the world, each accomplishing a different task in the body, so too The Lord’s glory found in His word is manifold. The knowledge of the glory of God, which we have been enlightened to, and which is seen in the face of Jesus Christ and by the interpretation of The Spirit, is so multi-faceted and broad, that as children, we hardly know what our souls require in any given circumstance. But thanks be to God who knows us deeply, and knows how to give our souls what they require out of His word, if so be we are seeking Him and abiding in Him.
With this simple thought may we be sufficed for today. May we rest ourselves upon the simple truth which prevails in every situation of our lives: “O LORD, thou knowest…” [Jer 15:15] The LORD knows everything, possessing perfect knowledge, as it is written, “great is our Lord, and of great power: His understanding is infinite.” [Psa 147:5] “There is no searching of His understanding;” [Isa 40:28] He knows us, He knows what we need, and because He is our shepherd we can proclaim with faith as is written, “The LORD is my Shepherd: I am not lacking.” [Psa 23:1]
