"So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off." [Prov 24:14]
In Colossians we are told, “in [Christ and The Father] are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” [Col 2:3] And again, in Proverbs we are exhorted to seek wisdom and understanding “as silver” and “as for hid treasure” from The LORD’s mouth, for,“The LORD giveth wisdom: out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” [Prov 2:6] In Isaiah, the first characteristic given of “the Spirit of The LORD” which rested upon Christ is “the Spirit of wisdom.” [Isa 11:1]
No doubt, we see that the acquisition of wisdom is found solely in God and in His Son, Jesus. Therefore, it is through the pursuit of Him that we may find more of it; for it is written, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” and also those who “fear Him,” who“seek The LORD shall not want any good thing.”[Psa 111:10; 34:9-10] Thus we see that in the pursuit of God, in the fear of God, wisdom is found, even like Jehoshaphat, who after hearing of the enemy, “feared, and set himself to seek the LORD.” [2 Ch 20:3]
With understanding that wisdom is found only at God’s mouth, (for “there is no wisdom…against The LORD” [Prov 21:30]), let us read again our passage for today,
“My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.” [Prov 24:13-14]
The Spirit shows us here that wisdom is like sweet honey to our souls, and that having found wisdom, we shall surely find reward. There is an assured profit from God’s wisdom, and those who have found themselves hoping in that provided knowledge or wisdom of God shall not lose their expectation, that is, their hope. In Psalms, David prays, “remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.” [Psa 119:49] Has The Lord given a word? Have we, like those in time past, “wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth” [Lk 4:22] and found them, however unlike those unbelievers in Jesus’ time, of great profit? If we have found comfort, hope, strength, or life in God’s word, then let us not lose hope. Let us not cast away our confidence therein; for “there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.” God’s word is certain, and the hope it generates is pure and good, even as the words themselves, which “are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” [Psa 12:6] There is no unfavorable part of God’s scripture – there is no dross. If we have found ourselves encouraged in time past by His word, be encouraged again today. If we have found ourselves hoping in it, hope again today. For again, “there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.”
