"He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." [Psa 107:20]
In Luke, the angel Gabriel tells Mary an encouraging truth, reminding her, and us, of an eternal consolation. He says, using a literal interpretation, “for no spoken word of God shall be impossible.” [Lk 1:37] There is not one word God has ever spoken, nor will ever speak, that shall be impossible. Each and every syllable ever uttered from the lips of God have all been wholly and completely true; yea, further, not just in that moment but for all of history, for God’s word shall never fail, never be impossible. We are told, “the word of The Lord endureth forever,” and, “for ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” [1 Pe 1:25, Psa 119:89] God’s word is forever secure and worthy to be leaned upon. Everything God says will be completed; even as Jesus told us,
“For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” [Mt 5:18]
Surely, God’s word is strong; as The LORD Himself is a rock and fortress, a castle in the mountains, and a sanctuary from the enemy, so too is His Word, which perfectly represents His character. David says, “thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” [Psa 119:114] Because of its strength, security, and faithfulness, we can steadily lean our weight upon God’s word, hoping in it; as David prayed, “remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath given me life.” [Psa 119:49-50]
It is by this very word, which God speaks into our life. He, through the Holy Spirit, with “a cup of cold water only,” as it were [c.f., Mt 10:42] gives to us of His word, drawing from the that fountain of life to provide us with a drink. We can see this in that Jesus, who says through Isaiah, “The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary,” told us, “[the Holy Spirit] shall take of mine, and shew it unto you.” [Isa 50:4, Jn 16:15] We therefore find much comfort in this, for we see that Christ our “Counsellor” [Isa 9:6] has a word for us in every season, which He gives to us through His Spirit dwelling in our hearts. As a cup of cold, refreshing water, so too Jesus brings to us a word of refreshment regarding our specific situations. Jesus always being near to us and available, we are never without opportunity to receive His word. It is through this word we are healed and delivered. We read from our verse today,
“He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” [Psa 107:20]
It only takes our King one, single word to grant us deliverance or healing. One word is all He needs to unleash whatsoever power is necessary to conquer our fears or release us from bondage or even to grant us literal healing. Let us believe this, behaving as the Centurion who confessed to Jesus, “speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” [Mt 8:8] Jesus said to that man who so believed in the power of His word, “go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” [Mt 8:13] As it was with the Centurion and his sick servant, so too it is with us. We need but only one word from our Lord Jesus, one single crumb from the bread of His word. His word contains such power therein that when God The Father said through Christ, “let there be light…there was light.” [Gen 1:3] What magnificent power our loving King holds; His word is exceedingly able. Though men’s words are not powerful nor lasting, God’s are. We read,
“The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” [Psa 30:10-11]
God’s word, and God’s thoughts, are age-enduring and powerful. Again, reading in Hebrews, The Spirit says, “the word of God is living, and productive.” [Heb 4:12] Because God’s word is so, let us frankly believe it. Let us doubt no longer, but cry out to Him for His word and seek it out as treasure; let it be to us as “better…than thousands of gold and silver,” [Psa 119:72] for it is infinitely more valuable than any medicine or any thing which may deliver the men of this world: it is the Word of God which abides and endures forever and which can quickly heal and deliver us from any ailment.
