In Jeremiah, The LORD uses a few different analogies to show how His people have forsaken Him or forgotten Him. One of these, though we will not view it in detail today, is found in chapter two. The LORD says, “can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.” [Jer 2:32]
There are more than just this one; consider what The LORD says in chapter eighteen,
"Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?" [Jer 18:14]
The snow of Lebanon, which resides in the mountaintops, thawed in the heat of summer and traveled down. At the bottom, there would be found cold flowing waters, as The LORD points out. These waters were fresh, they were pure, and they were free; so why would Israel forsake these waters? The point God is making, as with the unlikely case of the bride forgetting her attire, is that they wouldn’t. For in the next verse, God says,
"Because My people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up." [Jer 18:15]
The point The LORD is making with Israel, and with us, is that it doesn’t make any sense to forget Him, to forsake Him. The LORD is our source of water. Just like these physical waters came from a high mountain, were fresh, abundant, and pure, so too from Jesus our Rock, who dwells in heaven, the Mountain of God, we receive water. But the water that comes from Jesus satisfies our very souls, giving us refreshment which physical water cannot. It is living water, and Jesus says regarding it,
"Jesus answered and said unto her, whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." [Jn 4:13-14]
Jesus provides us with fresh living water; it is the most satisfying water that one could ever drink, for it is for the soul. Jesus’ living water gives our souls life. And Jesus offers it to us freely! With such an amazing offer, we would be foolish to forsake Him. It would not make any logical sense, and any so-called knowledge, logic, or understanding, which leads one away from Jesus to search for “water” or satisfaction elsewhere is evil. For The LORD writes earlier in Jeremiah,
"For My people have committed two evils; they have forsaken Me The Fountain of Living Waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water." [Jer 2:13]
CONCLUSION
Let us abide in the refreshing waters that The Lord supplies us with. He alone holds fresh, pure, living water that can satisfy our very souls.
