Jesus said to the people seeking Him in John 6, after performing the miracle of feeding the five thousand with five barely loaves of bread and two small fishes,
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye seek Me not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man shall give unto you; for Him hath God the Father sealed."
From this we see that we need to labor not for worldly riches but eternal riches. We need to labor for the “excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.” Labor for Jesus Himself, for “the bread of life,” from “the bread which came down from heaven.”
All other riches are temporary and will fly away. Proverbs says,
"When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Be not desirious of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven." [Prov 23:1-5]
The riches of this world, the riches which the ruler(s) of this world provide are temporary and fleeting, but the riches that Jesus gives endure to everlasting life.
See also how Solomon says, “put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.” If we are desirious of temporary meat, in contrast to Jesus’ offer of eternal meat, then we are in effect seeking death. “For to be carnally minded is death.” Instead seek life; Jesus says, “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” [Jn 6:63]
Another thing we see from Solomon’s wisdom is that,
"Be not desirious of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat." [Prov 23:3]
And further on,
"Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: for as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee." [Prov 23:6-7]
CONCLUSION
The prince/ruler of this world, who is Satan, has an evil eye toward us. The meat he offers us through the world is deceitful. It may look good, but it leads to death. Satan’s heart, the world’s heart – these are not for us, not with us. But Jesus’ heart is with us. Jesus is for us!
Refuse the meat of this world: entertainment, vanity, materialism, wealth, pleasure, partying, etc… These things are dainty meats. Like physical food, they offer no lasting satisfaction. Let us instead draw near to Christ and eat of Him. For Jesus says,
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in Him." [Jn 6:53-56]
