Everything in this life will eventually let us down. There is no physical thing or person who will not eventually be taken away from us, or us from them. This life is fleeting and short, and everything that can be seen with the eyes and heard with the ears is temporary. John tells us,
"And the world is passing away, and the lust thereof: but he that is doing the will of God abideth forever." [1 Jn 2:17]
Praise be to God who promises us,
"...whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed." [Rom 10:11]
Thank God we can surely and confidently place all of our weight upon Christ! He is The Rock and He can all of our weight. We can put every ounce of our energy, every dollar of our wallet, every minute of our life into Christ and in the end, when it’s all said and done, we will not be ashamed!
No one who trusts in The LORD Jesus Christ will be ashamed, and that should give us confidence to continue in service to Him. As Paul says, “be ye securely positioned, unmoveable, always overflowing in the work of The Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
We will not awake one day to contempt or shame; we will not awake one day, though we may feel it perhaps, to find out our labor for Jesus Christ was, as Solomon said, “vanity of vanities.” But in stark contrast, one day, as the sweet psalmist of Israel says, “I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.” [Psa 17:15] One day we will awake to a blessed glory, in which our pure labors for Christ will be rewarded.
Neither will we be ashamed to find out that those who lived wickedly were rewarded just the same, but we will be in everlasting joy while they shall not. The LORD speaks through Isaiah in this context, saying,
"…for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me." [Isa 49:23]
And David prays this promise, pleading with God in the midst of wicked men,
"In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion." [Psa 71:1]
Take heart and lean upon Jesus Christ! He is the only thing present in this current life which can support us. Everything else will break eventually; everything else will let us down; everything else will fall short. Except for Christ. Those who wait upon, those who trust in, those who call upon Jesus Christ’s glorious and strong name will never be ashamed.
